Brake pads are an essential component of a vehicle's braking system. They are pieces of friction material mounted to a backing plate, which is then secured to a caliper bracket. When brakes are applied, the caliper bracket pushes the pads onto the spinning rotor or drum surface, and this creates the friction necessary to slow or stop the rotation of the wheel.
There are two main types of brake pads. Disc brake pads are pressed against the face of the brake rotor or disc, while drum brake pads press against the inside surface of a brake drum. The friction material is made out of a composite containing friction modifiers like sintered metal, fiber, rubber, ceramics or other materials depending on the application. The pad is mounted to a steel backing plate, which provides support and the necessary structure to hold it in place.
Brake pads gradually wear down over time with use, and they need to be replaced once enough of the friction material has worn away– typically 5mm. If the brake pads are too thin, they won't be able to provide enough brake torque. Replacing brake pads is a common brake repair job that requires the use of a new set for each wheel to account for differences in wear.

Road vehicles, such as cars, trucks, SUVs, and motorcycles, usually have disk brake pads that are mounted onto the caliper bracket. The caliper piston squeezes the rotating brake disc or rotor to produce friction and slow the vehicle.
Trailers are typically equipped with drum brakes that use brake shoes or pads to press against the inside surface of a drum brake assembly in order to slow the trailer wheels down as they are towed.
Airport vehicles, like planes and other operating vehicles, need aviation-grade brake pads that can handle extreme weather conditions and heavy loads effectively in order to stop heavy vehicles.
Heavy equipment such as construction and mining trucks, bulldozers, and the like require heavy-duty brake pads for drum or disc brakes that are capable of stopping very large machines carrying large amounts of cargo.
Bicycles often use rim brakes where pad blocks contact the wheel. Alternatively, hub brakes involve pads that squeeze a drum in order to slow the bike down in a more lightweight package.
Elevators, meanwhile, utilize brakes with pads that grab onto elevator guide rails or grips. These brakes are utilized to stop the elevator in the event of emergency stops or if power is lost.
Finally, train brake systems employ different kinds of pads, such as tread brakes and disc brakes, to provide efficient stopping for both freight and passenger trains which are exceptionally huge and heavy.
