Brake pad composition can vary significantly, depending on the application and braking needs. Some of the most common material types include sintered metal, ceramic, semi-metallic, and organic formulations. Ceramic and semi-metallic pads tend to be more durable and provide better stopping power than the cheaper organic pads, however, organic pads will wear down faster.
New brake pads have wear indicators molded in, and as the pads are worn down, the indicators protrude above the friction material thus allowing drivers to visually know that the pads eventually will need to be replaced. Not all brake pads are silent, the semi-metallic pads tend to create more noise and cause squealing when brakes are applied heavily. This is usually caused by glazed, contaminated, or unevenly worn friction material.
On top of noise, brake pad wear is responsible for brake dust, a fine powdery substance that accumulates on the wheels, brakes, and under the vehicle. Some of this dust is based on copper and some manufacturers are attempting reduce the copper content to lessen the amount of dust created. Organic and ceramic pads tend to produce less dust.
It is also important to make sure the pad material is compatible with the type of rotors, either in cast iron or steel. Certain ceramic pads require specially coated rotors to prevent any wear. The friction coefficient of the pad materials must also be closely monitored by the manufacturer as this indicates the amount of braking force applied to the rotor or drum when a certain pressure is applied.
Climate and temperature can also affect the performance of the brake pads, so some pads contain additives to ensure consistent braking even in more extreme temperatures.

Semi-metallic brake pads are a combination of metals, fibers and binders, usually containing copper or graphite. They provide good stopping power from the outset, but tend to generate more brake dust and noise than other types. Furthermore, they are better at heat dispersion than organic pads, and offer the lowest cost.
While semi-metallic brake pads may require frequent replacement, they offer a good solution with a low initial cost, making them a popular choice for most drivers.
Ceramic brake pads are made from a ceramic-based friction material, and offer excellent stopping power and a long lifespan. A major benefit of ceramics is their very low noise output compared to semi-metallics, as well as the minimal brake dust they generate.
Ceramic brake pads offer excellent performance under heavy braking and heat, as well as greater resistance to high temperatures. While more expensive than semi-metals, ceramics are a viable option - although they require specially-coated rotors to prevent quick wear. They are harder and more brittle than semi-metallics, and therefore more prone to cracking or shattering if stuck or frozen on the rotor.
In conclusion, ceramics provide better performance for experienced drivers, while semi-metallic brings cost-effectiveness and good performance to the bulk of drivers.

Semi-metallic brake pads are suitable for most passenger vehicles such as cars, SUVs and trucks in everyday driving conditions. They provide a great balance of performance and value, and are also used for commercial vehicles and heavy-duty applications that require a lot of stop-and-go driving. Further, they can handle performance vehicles that are exposed to challenging track driving and high-heat scenarios, and tow vehicles that carry heavy loads.
On the other hand, ceramic brake pads are ideal for high-performance sports and race cars that face repeated extreme braking. They are beneficial for luxury/exotic cars, as they produce low dust and noise, last longer, and can handle wide temperature ranges. Additionally, ceramic pads are preferred for expensive specialty vehicles such as motorcycles and ATVs due to weight/size savings. Ultimately, they are suitable for heavy trucks, buses, commercial fleets and off-road vehicles.
In a nutshell, semi-metallic brake pads are tailored to general consumer applications, while ceramics provide best results for high-performance, severe-duty or specialty uses requiring maximum durability and heat resistance.
