Brake pad composition can vary depending on the application and braking needs. Commonly used materials include sintered metal, ceramic, semi-metallic and organic formulations. Ceramic and semi-metallic pads promise a good stopping power and longer life, however organic are much cheaper but tend to wear faster.
Most new pad models are equipped with small wear indicators which are molded in the friction material. Due to pad wear, these indicators poke out, giving drivers a visual warning that they will need to replace the pads soon.
Some brake pads, like ceramic, are quieter than conventional semi-metallic pads. Squealing noises may be emitted from pads when they heat up during heavy braking. This type of noise can be caused by glazed, contaminated or unevenly worn friction material.
As the pads wear down, it produces brake dust, a fine powder which collects on wheels, brakes and under the vehicles. Much of the brake dust is copper-based and certain manufactures are actively trying to lessen the copper content to reduce its release.
The type of pads used must also be compatible with the type of rotors, whether it’s cast iron or steel. In addition, some ceramic pads require specially coated rotors to prevent premature wear between the components.
Manufacturers need to strictly regulate the friction coefficient of pad materials, indicated the amount of pressure needed to applied to generate a certain braking force on the rotor or drum.
The performance of the brakes might be affected by varying temperatures and conditions, so some heavy-duty pads contain additives to decrease the effects of extreme climates.

Made of a combination of metals, fiber, and binders, semi-metallic brake pads usually contain copper or graphite. Despite their lower cost, they provide good stopping power even when new and they offer strong braking right away. However, they tend to produce more brake dust and noise than other types and may squeal under heavy use. Semi-metallic brake pads are also better at dissipating heat than their organic counterparts.
Ceramic brake pads are made of a ceramic-based friction material. They offer excellent stopping power and very low wear rates, resulting in long pads life as compared to semi-metallics. They run very quietly and produce minimal brake dust, making them a driver's favorite. They work well even under heavy braking and heat, plus they can withstand higher operating temperatures. Despite their costlier initial investment, they may save in the long run due to infrequent replacement needs. However, they need specially-coated rotors to prevent early wear, as ceramics are very abrasive.
In summary, semi-metallics offer good value and performance for most drivers while ceramics provide higher performance for hardcore driving conditions.
