Product Description:

Brake pad composition varies according to the specific application and braking needs of a vehicle. Sintered metal, ceramic, semi-metallic and organic materials are common among various brake pads. Generally, ceramic and semi-metallic pads provide both excellent stopping power and long pad life. Organic pads, however, are cheaper but they tend to wear faster.

In addition, many new pads have small wear indicators molded in, indicated by protrusions above the friction material. As the pad wears down, these indicators become more visible as a warning to the driver that the pads need replacing soon.

The type of pads used can also affect brake noise. For example, ceramic brake pads are generally quieter than conventional semi-metallic pads, which might emit squealing noises under heavy braking as they heat up. Noisy pads might be due to glazed, contaminated, or unevenly worn friction material. Moreover, brake pad wear also produces brake dust, a fine powder that collects on wheels, brakes and under the vehicle. Some manufacturers are reducing copper content to reduce dust production, as ceramic and organic pads produce less dust.

In addition, the pad material must be compatible with the rotor type, either cast iron or steel, as some ceramic pads require specially coated rotors to prevent premature wear. Manufacturers must control the friction coefficient of pad materials, which indicate the braking force generated for a given amount of applied pressure. To ensure consistent braking performance under extreme temperatures and conditions, heavy-duty pads may contain additives in their pad composition.


Semi-metallic brake pads are made from a combination of metals, fibers and binders, usually containing copper or graphite. They provide strong braking power when new and tend to produce more brake dust and noise than other types. Also, they dissipate heat better than organic pads and are available at a lower cost. However, they wear faster than ceramic pads and may need to be replaced more often.

Ceramic brake pads are made from a ceramic-based friction material and offer excellent stopping power and very low wear rates. These last much longer than semi-metallic pads and are very quiet while producing minimal brake dust. They work well under heavy braking and heat and are better at withstanding higher operating temperatures. Though these pads are initially more expensive, they may save money in the long run due to their infrequent replacement needs.

In summary, semi-metallics offer a good value and performance level for most drivers while ceramics provide higher performance for more extreme driving conditions.
